Revolutionising the evolution of entrepreneurship

By Zimasa Mbovane

Many people are not well-acquainted with the concept of entrepreneurship, especially in terms of starting businesses and actualising their ideas. Dr Thobekani Lose, the Unit Head and Researcher at the Nelson Mandela University Center for Entrepreneurship Rapid Incubator was interviewed to highlight the importance of the upcoming first-ever entrepreneurship evolution program. “Entrepreneurship goes beyond just starting a business. It involves adapting, innovating, and evolving in a constantly changing world. For aspiring student innovators, understanding this evolution is essential,” said Dr Lose.

On the 12th of June 2024, the Centre for Entrepreneurship Rapid Incubator will be hosting the first in a series of entrepreneurship evolution events. These events aim to introduce students to the concept of entrepreneurship and guide them on how they can use these insights to enhance their businesses and bring their ideas to fruition.

Nelson Mandela University, in partnership with the Department of Small Businesses and its agencies such as Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA), intends to change the mindset of students and the youth in general, fostering entrepreneurial thinking within the university.

The significance of entrepreneurship evolution cannot be overstated, as it is crucial in a world where the only constant is change. The Centre for Entrepreneurship Rapid Incubator is committed to equipping students with the skills and knowledge needed to navigate this continuously evolving landscape. By fostering a robust entrepreneurial ecosystem, the Centre for Entrepreneurship Rapid Incubator will create a pipeline of innovative thinkers and business leaders who are well-prepared to drive economic growth and social change. This initiative will not only benefit students but also contribute to the broader community by encouraging the development of new businesses that can create jobs and stimulate local economies. “Ours is to spark an idea and inculcate the mindsets of students within the university”, said Dr Lose.

The entrepreneurship evolution program will provide comprehensive support to students, from the first stages of starting up their businesses to more complex processes like obtaining tax clearances. He further said that this integrated approach will ensure that students are not only able to launch their businesses but can also manage and grow them effectively. Consequently, each theme of the entrepreneurship evolution program will delve into specific areas critical to entrepreneurial success, such as business planning, funding strategies, marketing, and regulatory compliance.
